Pleated Tote

Skill Level: Level 1

Pre-Requisites: Adult Sewing Basics; or Adult Sewing Machine 101; or equivalent experience

Skills Learned: Slip pocket, interfacing, making straps, pleats and boxed corners

Pre-Work: No work is necessary before class, however, you will have work between classes that involves ironing.

Materials:

  • Pattern: Pattern used is from The Long Thread

  • Fabric and Notions:

    • 1 yard quilting cotton for exterior

    • 3/4 yard quilting cotton for interior

    • 1 fusible fleece interfacing

    • Coordinating Thread

Poolside Tote

Looking for a roomy bag to store all your things? (Great for summer, but if you're like me you have LOTS of stuff ALL the time!) This is it! Learn some more advanced bag making techniques with this great pattern by Noodlehead.

Skill Level: Level 3

Pre-Requisites: Adult Sewing Basics; or Adult Sewing Machine 101 and Zipper Pouch; or equivalent experience

Skills Learned: Slip pocket, interfacing, making straps, pleats, boxed corners, facings to finish bags, zipper pocket if desired

Pre-Work: Cut pattern pieces and fabric prior to class

Materials:

  • Pattern: Pattern must be purchased from Hartford Stitch.

  • Fabric and Notions:

    • Exterior fabric 1 1/4 yards (1 yard if using 54’’ wide fabric) (Suggested: Home Dec, Duck Canvas, Heavy Linen, Denim or Twill. Avoid outdoor fabrics that fray easily.)

Rope Handle Beach Tote

Skill Level: Level 1

Pre-Work: Please cut fabric and interfacing to size (measurements will be provided after registration)

Materials:

  • Pattern: Pattern used is a modified version of Radiant Home Studio’s Rope Handle Beach Tote and will be provided at class.

  • Fabric and Notions:

    • .75 yard exterior fabric in home dec weight (including home dec, canvas, etc)

    • 1 yard interior fabric in medium weight (including quilting cotton)

    • 2.5 yards Shape Flex interfacing (Pellon SF101)

    • 9” closed end zipper

    • Coordinating thread (thread will be seen on both exterior and lining fabric)

    • Rope for handles will be provided at the class

Traverse Bag

This perfect cross body bag features LOTS of pockets and two different sizes! Learn how to install zippers in sew pockets in several different ways with these great project!

Skill Level: Level 2-3

Pre-Requisites: Adult Sewing Basics; or Adult Sewing Machine 101 and Zipper Pouch; or equivalent experience

Skills Learned: Interfacing, slip pocket, zipper pocket, top zipper enclosure, installing hardware, making a strap, adding piping

    • Requirements based on 44”-wide fabric.

BAGS...

Garment 101

Sewing clothes is fun and rewarding (nobody else will have the exact same shirt you do!). Join us in learning about fabric, patterns and garment sewing techniques while we sew up the Scout Tee by Grainline Studio.

Skill Level: Level 1

Prerequisites: Adult Sewing Machine 101 or Adult Sewing Basics

Skills Learned: Fabric selection, taking measurements, transferring pattern lines and notations, seam finishes, neck binding and hemming.

Materials:

  • Pattern: Scout Tee by Grainline Studio, provided with class registration

  • Fabric and notions:

    • 2 yards of light to light midweight fabric such as cotton, silk, lawn, voile, charmeuse, crepe de chine or wool crepe. Please avoid one-way designs, stripes and plaids. We will discuss fabric the first class so you do not need to purchase prior to the second class.

    • coordinating thread

Equipment: You are welcome to bring your machine or use on of ours. All small tools will be provided.

Flex Workshops: This class can be recreated by taking Patterns 101 and using Flex Workshops for the Scout Tee project.

Patterns 101

Your crash course in reading and working with patterns! Learn to take your basic measurements accurately, read the parts of a commercial pattern, understand and transfer pattern notations, and laying out pattern pieces on fabric. Students will use a sample, mini pattern during this course. No sewing will take place but you'll be prepped for future garment classes!

Skill Level: Level 1

Prerequisites: Adult Sewing Machine 101 or Adult Sewing Basics

Materials: All materials will be provided

Equipment: No equipment is necessary

Flex Workshop: This is not available for Flex Workshops

Knit 101

Ready to tackle knits? It's really not that hard on your regular sewing machine, especially with this great top by Fancy Tiger Crafts! Join us to learn the tools and tricks needed to sew knit perfectly!

Skill Level: Level 1

Prerequisites: Adult Sewing Machine 101 or Adult Sewing Basics

Skills Learned: Handling knit fabric, tips for cutting, seaming and hemming knits

Materials:

Equipment: You are welcome to bring your machine or use on of ours. All small tools will be provided.

Alberta Street Pencil Skirt

Our Fall 2017 Featured Garment Pattern!

The Alberta Street Pencil Skirt is a great classic silhouette for any season. It is a slim fitting, unlined skirt with little to no ease in the hips with a tapered hem that lands just below the knees. It features a contoured waistband that sits just below the waist, angled and oversized front patch pockets, double back darts, a back vent and center back zipper. The instructions call for a set in back zipper however, an invisible zipper could easily be substituted for an intermediate or advanced sewist.  Sizes 0 - 20

Prerequisites: Adult Sewing Basics or Adult Sewing Machine 101; Garment 101 or Pattern 101; or equivalent experience

Skills Learned: sewing darts, installing a zipper, skirt fitting, sewing a faced waistband, hemming, making a back vent,

City Gym Shorts

Skill Level: Level 2

Pre-Requisites: Adult Sewing Basics or Adult Sewing Machine 101; Garment 101 or Patterns 101; or equivalent experience

Skills Learned: Bias binding, seam finishing, attaching a waistband casing

Pre-Work: Please download and assemble pattern and cut pattern to your size (please use your actual measurements for best results!). Pre-wash fabric.

Materials:

  • Pattern: Students will need to download, print, assemble and cut the free pdf pattern from the Purl Soho site.**Please take your measurements and select the correct size. Check out my video tutorial on e-pattern assembly.

  • Fabric and Notions:

    • 1-2 yards 1" elastic

    • 1.5 yard light to mid-weight fabric (including chambray, linen, lawn, shirting, etc). If making the front of the shorts a different fabric than the back and binding, allow 1/2 yard for front and 1 yard for back/binding/waistband

    • Coordinating thread

Drop Pocket Cardigan

Our Fall 2017 Featured Garment Pattern!

Because we all love cardigans! You can wear this one to work, to and from your workout or to transition your tanks into fall.

  • Drop pocket open front cardigan that hits just below the hips.

  • The sleeve is fitted and designed to be worn over a sleeveless top or dress.

  • The double-layer front provides a great finish and allows the use of contrast fabric where the inside of the cardigan becomes the outside of the pocket.

Sewing clothes for kids is such a great way to learn garment skills on a small scale. This beautiful dress will be a go-to pattern after you've made it just once!

Skills Learned: Lining a bodice, gathered or pleated skirt, adding snaps or button holes, sewing on buttons, hemming
